While choosing a water heater can be a daunting task to the decision making challenged like myself, it can be made easier by comparing options. We’ve come up with a few categories of comparison for our water heater showdown that may help you find the right water heater for your needs.
HOT WATER AVAILABILITY
Conventional water heaters work by slowly heating water in a tank to around 130 degrees. Most home needs are met by a large conventional hot water heater. however, if you exhaust your supply of hot water you may need to wait for the refilled tank to reach temperature again.
Hot water on demand systems or tankless hot water heaters continuously heat the water as it flows so you never run out of hot water.
EFFICIENCY
While conventional heaters are inefficient, heat pump based water heaters operate much more efficiently by transferring ambient heat in to the water tank. Tankless water heaters are also very efficient as they work on demand.
COST
Conventional tank water heaters come in at the lowest cost to purchase and install, they’re more readily available and don’t require much extra work to replace. Tankless heaters are more expensive and may require a larger gas line than conventional heaters.
LIFE
Both options generally come in a tie in this category overall, with proper maintenance and inspection most water heaters should last up to 15 years.
