Modern cleaning product advertisements make it seem like cleaning tile grout is as easy as using Windex on your bathroom mirror. Sadly, this is far from any reality many of us have experienced. For most of us, this task is next to impossible. We’ve come up with a few tips that may save you time and effort. Cleaning shower tile grout no longer has to be a source of anxiety.

Dirty tile grout isn’t just a visual blight, it can also carry health risks. Being an area of high moisture, showers can be a haven for mold growth, causing heath issues. Any mold must be dealt with quickly. But, cleaning with improper chemicals can cause damage to your grout, creating a leak behind the tiles, and potentially leading to water damage.

Prevention

Preventing shower grout mold isn’t impossible. However, Regular cleaning of your shower will not prevent grout problems alone. Consider these preventative methods.

Grout Sealant

Grout sealers are available in most hardware stores. A sealer will prevent mildew and debris from penetrating your grout. They come in a spray form as well as a roll on version. Make sure to read the safety and application instructions before use. Tile and grout sealers at Home Depot

Ventilation

One of the most important things you can do is remove the moisture that causes mold and mildew. Run a bathroom fan during and for 15 mins after your shower to exhaust any moisture left in the bathroom.

Remove Excess Water

After showering, dry the tiles off with a towel. Removing any moisture on the tiles will help prevent the buildup of mold and mildew.

Chemical Cleaners

Cleaners containing acids should not be used. They eat away your grout creating the risk of leaks and water damage. However, there are plenty of alternative cleaners available to use. Make sure to have sufficient ventilation as many cleaners off gas irritating fumes. Do not use different cleaners together or in close secession. Many cleaning chemicals react when combined.

Natural Alternatives to chemical cleaners

Natural cleaners are a great replacement to chemicals for many reasons. They do not contain harmful substances that could have negative health effects. Natural cleaners are much safer for the environment. Finally, natural cleaners are much cheaper that store bought cleaners.

Before cleaning, you’ll want a nylon bristled brush, toothbrushes wont likely have enough strength to scrub grout properly. Prepare for some scrubbing. Elbow grease will be needed.

Hot Water

The first option to try before anything else, hot water can often be enough to loosen up hard to beat mildew.

Baking Soda And Water

Add only enough water to make a paste. Apply on the problem areas and scrub.

Baking Soda And Hydrogen Peroxide

Baking Soda and Hydrogen Peroxide for cleaning shower tile grout.

Mix 3/4 cup baking soda and 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide and a squirt of dish soap. Scrub the grout with your brush, after a few minutes rinse the area with water.

Oxygenated bleach

This is a non-toxic form of bleach available in stores. Simply apply and scrub problem areas. NOTE: NEVER MIX WITH VINIGAR!!!!!
